The Scene
The Daytona International Speedway has long been synonymous with NASCAR's signature race--the Daytona 500. But the 480-acre complex, billed as the "World Center of Racing," is home to numerous races throughout the year, including the Pepsi 400, the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the Supercross by Honda. You can see everything from stock-car racing to motorcycles and go-karts at this historical track, but that's not all. The best time to visit the track is in late October, when the Fall Cycle Scene takes place. Also, in February, when the grand-daddy of Winston Cup races, the Daytona 500, gets into gear.

More
Visit Daytona USA, an interactive entertainment facility, to see exhibits like Goodyear Heritage of Daytona, Wall of Winners, Racing Vehicles of Daytona, DuPont Technology of Speed, Pepsi Theater, Gatorade Victory Lane and ESPN's You Call the Race.

The Appeal
Disney's Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow never quite fulfilled its promise as the future of civilization. However, it did find a way to offer patrons a much-welcomed respite from thrill rides by, of all things, educating the masses with innovative, technological attractions and plenty of humor and kitsch.

Features
The park spreads itself over two sections, Future World and World Showcase. Topics like health, nature and imagination are explored with an eye to education and a heart for fun. World Showcase houses 11 pavilions, each a marvel of elaborate, international decor and multicultural traditions.

Jai-alai (pronounced hi' li') is a handball-like game of Spanish Basque origin. It involves guys wearing padded clothes and masks slinging hard rubber balls at each other at speeds of up to 150mph, making it the fastest ball sport in the world. The catch is, the players have to catch the balls in wicker claws attached to their arms and then sling it back. Watching a game of jai-alai can be terrifying, but it's also fascinating to marvel at the sheer agility it takes to avoid being creamed by that ball. Mutual wagering makes the game all that more intense. There's also a Race Book open for thoroughbred, harness, and jai alai betting with 30 large-screen TVs, 340 individual carrels with nine- inch TVs, and a state-of-the-art sound design. Mix a restaurant into it all and you have a surreal experience, my friends. You have to try it once to believe it, and the price is right.--Bing Futch
